The NIBSORB® technology represents the result of exacting development by MTV culminating in the application of coatings with very unusual, but desirable, characteristics. They are able to absorb neutron radiation.
The goal of outstanding corrosion resistance with a high nuclear radiation absorption capability was achieved by combining homogenously dispersed absorbing particles in a ductile carrier matrix.
To achieve this objective, special development had to be made both in the electrolyte chemistry and the deposition and handling techniques. In particular the very high wear and corrosion resistance characteristics demanded by the corrosive environment encountered in the wet and/or dry transport and storage conditions made it necessary to develop a totally new coating.
All these objectives are met with a NIBSORB® coating consisting of a traditional carrier metal and a co-deposited high effi ciency absorption material.
This approach achieved weight and space savings and allowed the possibility to store nuclear fuels with higher burn-ups.
