Copper is an easily mechanical treatable metal with various benefits, which allows a wide range of applications. It is corrosion resistant to water, salt solutions and acids (as long they are not oxidizing) and therefore provides an effective protection against aggressive, reducing media. Hence, galvanic copper-plating is the basis of many corrosion protection systems. Copper is preferable used as a barrier coat on machine parts, for which a diffusion barrier against hydrogen or carbon is required. Copper is also often used as a lubricating material for metallic connections due to its ductility and good emergency operation qualities.
